Frequently Asked Questions
What size winch do I need for my Jeep?
The standard rule is 1.5x your vehicle GVWR. A Jeep Wrangler (5,000-6,000 lbs loaded) needs a 9,500-12,000 lb winch. A 10,000 lb winch is the most popular choice. For heavier builds with steel bumpers and armor, go with 12,000 lbs. Gladiators should use 12,000-13,000 lb winches due to higher weight.
Synthetic rope or steel cable — which is better?
Synthetic rope is lighter (8-10 lbs vs 25-30 lbs for steel), safer if it snaps (does not recoil violently), easier to handle, and floats in water. Steel cable is cheaper, more abrasion-resistant, and better for sustained high-heat use. Synthetic rope is the preferred choice for off-road Jeeps. Replace synthetic rope if it shows significant fraying or UV damage.
Do I need a winch plate or a winch-ready bumper?
A winch needs a mounting surface rated for its capacity. A winch-ready bumper has an integrated plate and fairlead opening. If your bumper does not have a winch plate, aftermarket winch mounting plates bolt to the frame. Never mount a winch to a standard bumper not designed for the load — it can rip the bumper off the frame under full pull.
How do I maintain my winch?
Unspool and respool the cable/rope every 3-6 months to prevent corrosion (steel) or memory set (synthetic). Clean and lubricate the fairlead rollers. Test the motor and remote control periodically. After water crossings or mud use, flush the winch motor area with clean water. Replace the rope/cable if it shows damage, and inspect the hook and shackle for cracks.
